An Example truss calc can show how a truss is modified, either intentionally or by a zealous plumber. The stamped engineering is submitted to the building department showing what is required to become structurally sound again.
Once the repair modifications are completed, a copy of the engineering should be stapled to the truss in the attic; that will prevent a future home inspection from being needed.

Usually to hire a Licensed Engineering Professional you will sign a contract that explains the scope of work, cost, and timeline for completion. The California Professions Code lists these elements in detail and any contract is required to include as a minimum all 5 items.
